The Logitech G502 Proteus Core Tunable Gaming Mouse is truly one incredible gaming mouse and, at the time of writing, comes as no surprise to learn it is Amazons #1 selling gaming mouse. With no shortage of customization options, this is an exceptional gaming mouse anyone in the market should pay some serious attention to.
- Surface tuning calibration for maximum accuracy
- Weigh and balance tuning to match your unique play style
- 11 programmable buttons
- 5 on the fly DPI settings to a max 12,000 DPI setting
- Improved dual mode hyper fast scroll wheel
The Logitech G502 Proteus Core is stunning to look at and it is simple but elegant in design with just enough splashes of neon colour and sharp angles to make it look like something from the future. The Mad Catz RAT7, whilst a great mouse, showed, in our view, its physical vulnerability in its design. The Logitech G502 Proteus Core on the other hand, shows no sign of weakness and looks like it is built to last.
Straight out of the box, you know you have spent your money wisely. The packaging is robust and comes with a case and tuning weights which can be used to balance and customize the weight distribution of the mouse. We always suggest that the weight should be adjusted according to the DPI you are using though its usually going to be a case of trial and error to find what is best for you. There are 3.6ram weights that can be adjusted.
With 11 programmable buttons, our view is that it strikes the right balance between not providing an overwhelming amount of customization options whilst still appealing to the hardcore gamer that likes to customise.
The left and right buttons are comfortable to click at speed, the scroll wheel functions solidly at ease and can click in three directions with a friction control button that sits just beneath the scroll. It has three thumb buttons and a right mouse button all positioned ergonomically at your fingertips.
The mouse is extremely ergonomic and the buttons are well placed to suit most hand sizes though if we had to say, it seems like its design is likely to favor those with smaller hands (for example the profile is really low). That however is our opinion and the mouse is likely to suit most hand sizes.
The lowest of the three thumb buttons lowers the DPI which makes it ideal as a sniper button for careful accurate headshots. The DPI buttons next to the left mouse button are easily accessible without looking whilst sufficiently out of the way to avoid pressing it by accident.
The Proteus Core can store three profiles internally in the mouse (which in our view should be sufficient for most) or a virtually unlimited amount of profiles on your PC.
One of the stand out features of the Logitech Proteus Core G502 is the surface tuning calibration function where users can optimize the mouse to work on any surface efficiently. We tried it on a table, desk, and a rough piece of card and it worked incredibly well.
We have been using the mouse, in the main, playing Star-craft 2 Wings of liberty and Call of Duty Ghosts and it has worked like a dream. We had to tinker with the DPI and the button map for each game but otherwise the mouse showed it is generally adaptable to various games. Its been adopted on the tournament scene though we are of the view that this can be easily picked up and used by the most casual of gamers.
A solid, responsive and accurate gaming mouse with ample customization options and a slick design makes this a front runner in the world of gaming mice. There are more sophisticated gaming mouses out there with more programmable and cusomizable options but apart from that level, its hard to suggest that anyone should pass up on this mouse. Truly superb!
